Plan to arrive well by 3pm on November 8th, in order to give yourself time to settle into your accommodations, meet with your new travel fam, and grab a quick shower before we head out for our Ethiopian Food Tour, which received the thumbs up from the late Anthony Bourdain.   By Night

After our world renowned food tour, we’ll head to a cultural show to get our first taste of the vast cultural variety found in Ethiopia. Here you’ll have your first introduction to the local beverage of Tej, Ethiopia’s famous honey wine, if you’re feeling bold.

We’ll get a late start to the day after an evening of Ethiopian style turn-up. After breakfast we’ll board our flight to Omo Valley, where most of the country’s indigenous tribes reside.   By Night

We’ll spend our afternoon and evening visiting the Hammer Tribe, one of the most well known tribe in Ethiopia. If the start align we’ll have the opportunity to catch their Bull Jumping ceremony, which is a rite of passage for boys as the cross into manhood.

Today you’ll start your morning with a visit to the Karo tribe, which is one of the smallest tribe in Ethiopia and traditionally known for their practice of scarification and captivating body paint. By Night

Later in the day you’ll have the chance to visit a local market and explore the Ethnographic Museum, which provides an enlightening history of Ethiopia’s numerous tribes.

Ready for a visit the Mursi tribe? Today we’ll visit the most famous of the Omo valley tribes, well-known for their lip plates and stick fighting tradition, called Donga.  By Night

After taking a domestic flight to Gondar, we’ll check into our posh accommodations. Feel free to do what feels right this evening. Catch dinner with your new travel family, grab a drink at the bar, or turn it in early. You’re free to do as you please this evening.

Take in the beautiful panoramic views at our resort in the morning. Then get ready to learn about Ethiopia’s rich royal history. Today we’ll take a tour of Gondar castle and learn about the various royal families and dynasties that ruled Ethiopia and the neighboring regions. By Night

After breakfast we’ll catch a brief flight to Lalibela, one of Ethiopia’s most famous cities which is often called the Petra of Africa. We’ll spend the afternoon traveling back in time as we observe age old religious practices and marvel at the city’s awe inspiring rock-hewn churches. By Night

Rise and shine! If you’re game you’ll be heading out for a sunrise church visit in Lalibela to experience the churches in action. You’ll feel like you’ve been transported back into biblical times, so we highly recommend not missing out on this experience.    Later we’ll catch a flight to Aksum. We’ll take a tour of this sacred town where we’ll view the Queen of Sheba’s palace, obelisks, and come within mere feet of the location where the Ark of the Covenant is believed to be stored. You’ll visit Haile Selassie’s palace, the National Museum of Ethiopia to see the earliest human remains documented, and a few local markets for last minute souvenir shopping. Preparing Before You Arrive

  • What expenses should I be prepared to pay for on-site?

    Most meals, activities, transportation, and housing are included in the package prices. Alcoholic beverages are not included in the package price. For reference alcoholic cocktails average between $7 and $12 while meals range start around $7 and go up from there.

  • What should I pack?

    Bali is a tropical location, so pack as you would for the Caribbean or any other island vacation. That means plenty of swimwear, breezy materials, and all things related to sun and water (including water shoes).

  • Is there an alcohol package?

    An alcohol package will not be offered; however, it is recommended that participants plan to purchase a bottle or two at the airport duty free as alcohol is expensive in Bali due to tax. For example, a bottle of Yellow Tail wine is roughly $35 compared to $7 in the US.

  • How do I purchase travel insurance?

    We recommend that you purchase travel insurance after booking your reservation. If you have questions regarding trip insurance coverage, you may contact Cici Chandler, travel agent with Mahogany Fly International ([email protected]). If you’re living outside of the United States, contact your local travel agent to purchase travel insurance for the festival.

Getting There

  • Are flights included in the price?

    No, this go-round flights are not included in the price, but you can check Secretflying.com, Priceline.com, and Kayak.com to find the best flight prices on the market.

  • What is the name of the airport we are flying in to?

    Airport code: DPS or Ngurah Rai International Airport (Denpasar)

  • Where can I find the best flight prices?

    All travelers must book their own flights to the
    Ngurah Rai International Airport (airport code DPS). We recommend using sites such as Expedia, Priceline, or Kayak.

  • What day and time should I arrive? When should I plan to depart?

    Housing accommodations will begin at 2pm on 6/7/20. Travelers should plan to arrive by 3pm if they intend to attend the opening events in the evening. Activities will conclude in the evening of 6/12/20, and all accommodations must be checked out of by 11am on 6/13/20.

    We strongly suggest that you arrive early or stay late in order to have plenty of free time for exploration.

  • How will I get from the airport to my housing?

    There will be many transport options at the airport. You can head over to the taxi stand to organize your transfers. The price should be around $25 USD.

  • Is there someone that can help me book my flight?

    Sure, you can reach out to Cici Chandler a travel agent at Mahogany Fly, Int’l. You can contact her at [email protected] , and she’ll be happy to assist with your flight booking.

  • Is there a specific airline recommended?

    While there is not a specific airline that we recommend, we do propose checking itineraries that fly through NYC or LAX as these seem to be the cheapest. Note that this may require you to create your own itinerary (i.e., fly from Miami to NYC then NYC to Bali)

Housing

  • What is the difference between the villa and the Balinese Hotel?

    The primary differences between the Private Villa and the Balinese Hotel are exclusivity and luxury of accommodations. For example, the Private Villa will be shared only with other BTF travelers, while the Balinese hotel may be shared with non-BTF travelers. Additionally, villas will offer a higher level of luxury with exclusive on-site staff, private pools, amazing gardens and or views etc.

  • Can I upgrade my reservation to a villa or downgrade to the Balinese Hotel option?

    Upgrade requests may be made by emailing [email protected]. Upgrades will be accommodated on a per reservation basis.

    Downgrades are prohibited. No Downgrade request will be taken.

  • Will I have to share a bed if I select double occupancy?

    Rooms with double occupancy may have a shared king or queen bed. This is more likely to be the case in the private villa option. However, it should be noted that some double occupancy rooms may have two beds.

Cancellation and Transferability

  • What if I get sick and can’t make it. Do I get my money back?

    All payments are non-refundable, but may be transferred to another traveler for a fee of $75. Trip insurance can help if you have a need to cancel unexpectedly.

  • What is the Policy for name changes should I need to transfer my reservation?

    Name changes are permitted for $75 per person. Name Changes are not permitted for Roomie Matching Program.  Name changes can only be made with people not currently booked for the festival.
The person taking your place needs to register with a staff member at Amola Enterprises, LLC and provide their credit card information. You must work out the money already paid between yourselves. The person taking your place pays the remaining balance to Amola Enterprises, LLC.

    Name changes can be completed up to 2 weeks prior to the event. No name changes will be made after the deadline.

Pricing, Payments and Booking

  • What is included in the price?

    All packages include the following:

    • Private villa or Balinese style hotel accommodations
    • Entrance to all festival activities
    • Most meals
    • Ground transportation
  • Which methods of payment are accepted for booking?

    Payments are processed through PayPal. As such all major credit cards are accepted (i.e., Visa, Mastercard, AmericanExpress, Discover)

  • How will I know my reservation is confirmed?

    Once you’ve made a payment you’ll be redirected to an online registration form. Following completion of the form, you’ll receive an email confirmation of your registration. You’ll also receive a detailed information pack prior to festival start.

  • What is the deadline for full payment?

    All payments must be completed one month prior to the event. 

  • What if I miss the payment deadline?

    If you do not make your payment deadline you will have 5 additional days to pay in full, and a late payment fee of $75 be will assessed.

  • What if my roommate doesn’t complete their payment?

    You will have two options if you’ve booked double occupancy and your roommate fails to complete payment.


    1. You can upgrade to the next package within your selected accommodation style. For example if you have selected a hotel double occupancy package, you can upgrade to the single occupancy package for $400. The same applies for the villa packages.
    2. You can find a replacement roommate and set up the replacement arrangements with your current roommate. If this happens your replacement will need to pay your former roommate directly for any portion already paid to Black Travel Fest, and pay the remaining balance directly to Black Travel Fest.
  • Do I have to use the payment plan or can I pay in full?

    Breakfast will be offered daily and 7 additional meals will be offered beyond this. These additional meals will be a combination of lunches and dinners.

  • Is this trip only for people of color?

    All are welcome at the Black Travel Fest. Just be sure to come prepared to have a good time and do it for the culture.

  • Can I stay longer than 5 days?

    Sure. You are welcome to arrive before the event and stay after if you like. Just note that the package only covers 6/7 through 6/13. Our team will provide recommendations for additional housing upon request.

  • Can I stay for only a few days?

    If you’re unable to attend all the scheduled days that’s okay, but we’d love to see you enjoying all of the events.

  • I can’t make those dates but I want to come to Bali at another date, do you have packages available for other dates?

    No doubt. Feel free to reach out to our team via email, and we’ll help you get set for another time in Bali.

  • Can I pay for the events and activities only?

    Unfortunately we’re unable to offer packages that exclude accommodations at this time.
